Croydon Ratha Yatra Festival is scheduled for Saturday, 2nd August, from 11:30am onwards from Croydon High Street opposite M&S.
Ratha Yatra, meaning "chariot festival," is a major event for devotees of Lord Krishna, particularly in the form of Jagannath (Lord of the Universe). This vibrant Hindu festival celebrates the deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladeva, and Lady Subhadra.
The festival is a chance for devotees to connect with the deities, express their devotion through chanting, dancing, and pulling the chariots, and receive blessings.
It's considered a spiritual journey for devotees, uniting them in celebration and promoting Krishna consciousness.
The procession through the city streets is a public display of faith and devotion, allowing the wider community to witness and participate in the festivities.
Introduced to the West by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Ratha Yatra is now celebrated annually in over 108 cities worldwide.
The festival is a time for the community to come together, share in the joy, and celebrate their shared faith.
The festivities conclude with a free vegetarian feast, a prasadam (sanctified food) offering for all attendees.
